What Is UNITED DEVICES?
This is a community project, along with United Devices, to help find a cure for cancer. The idea is simple; everyone downloads a program which analyses data about cells, and then sends it back to a HQ server for processing of results. Eventually, hopefully, someone will chance upon a result which will lead to a cure for cancer.

How It Works...
Most computers aren't using all their computing power at a given time. Even when you are engaged in a game, creating graphics, surfing the web, you may only be employing a fraction of your machine's available computing power. United Devices has built a small, secure software agent for individuals to download to their machine that can save this wasted power and put it to use.

Anyone with a computer can download the UD Agent. You then register your UD Agent to get credit for the computational work your computer is doing. The UD Agent just runs quietly in the background without disturbing your usual computer usage, using the spare power that your computer isn't using. And, bit-by-bit, it performs a few of the millions of calculations required to analyze a molecule, run through an algorithm, measure a tiny temperature change. The Agent sends data back to United Devices servers to compile the various bits of data processed by the individual members.

Each bit of computing power counts. When thousands of computers work together doing their part, a virtual supercomputer is formed, one that allows projects that were previously unimaginable. That is why we say we are building the world's largest computer one computer at a time.

Let's Get Started

Check to ensure you have at least the minimum recommended system requirements (below).
Intel Pentium™ processor or equivalent
At least 48 MB RAM
500 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 20 MB available for use
The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
An Internet connection
Operating System: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a
Windows 95 requires Winsock 2.0, available at www.microsoft.com

Download the United Devices Agent set-up file to your computer here http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm. You can either choose the directory location or run it from our server.
When the download is complete, simply "double-click" on the 'ud_agent_setup_0.exe' file (in the location where you chose to save it) to begin the installation.
